What credentials do I need to become a principal in Connecticut?

In Connecticut, you’ll need a minimum of a master’s degree to start your journey to becoming a principal. To become a school principal, you’ll need credentials. In Connecticut, these credentials are called a principal certificate. Similar to teaching certificates, each state has different requirements you must meet to earn your certificate. You’ll apply for your principal certificate from the state of Connecticut.

How to become a principal in Connecticut, step-by-step

You must earn your Intermediate Administration and Supervision certificate to become a principal in Connecticut. This certificate will also allow you to serve as an assistant principal, program director, academic dean, curriculum director or assistant superintendent.

 

To earn your principal certificate in Connecticut, you’ll need to do a few things. These are the basic steps:

 

  1. Meet education requirements

You’ll need a minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

 

  1. Meet experience requirements

In Connecticut, you must have at least 50 months of appropriate teaching experience. 

 

  1. Complete 18 graduate-level credits after your master’s degree

To become a principal in Connecticut, you must complete 15 graduate-level credits in educational administration. You will also need to complete three credits in special education. You will need a formal recommendation for certification from the graduate institution you attended. 

 

  1. Pass your exams

You’ll need to pass the principal exams before you get your certificate. The exam varies from state to state. In Connecticut, you’ll take the Connecticut Administrator Test. It’s designed to ensure you have the knowledge and skills to fulfill your duties as a principal. 

 

  1. Complete and pass a background check
