Norwalk Public Schools

Our district's rich diversity is a key part of its strength. Representing 68 countries and speaking 63 languages, Norwalk students come from a variety of backgrounds, with 42 percent speaking a second language at home. Norwalk Public Schools delivers a learning experience rich in multicultural diversity, as well as one that reflects the global society in which our graduates will live.

Norwalk is home to approximately 11,500 students and over 1,670 dedicated professionals who serve as leaders in closing achievement gaps across the state. We are quickly becoming a district of choice in our community. 

Norwalk consists of a state-of-the-art, inclusive pre-K Early Childhood Center; one full immersion, dual-language, bi-literate, bilingual and bi-cultural elementary school; a Connecticut Elementary School of Distinction; a 2014 National Blue Ribbon Science Magnet Elementary School; two comprehensive high schools inclusive of an Early College Academy and an International Baccalaureate Global Studies Program; and 10 additional elementary schools and four middle schools.

Norwalk Public Schools operates in collaboration with the National Federation of Teachers Union (NFT), and the starting pay rate for an educator with no experience is $50,445.

Norwalk Public Schools offers the opportunity for non-certified staff members who currently hold a bachelor's degree to participate in the alternative-to-educator program RELAY.

The district selects four participants each year and not only pays the cost of tuition, but provides the RELAY participant furlough from their position with full pay to be mentored in a classroom and participate in substitute teaching while going through the program.

Upon completion of the RELAY program, the graduate will be placed into the teacher entry program as a long-term teacher, secure their teacher license, and receive the necessary training and professional development to become a star teacher.
